Short description

Stations increase the accessibility at regional and national level and create potential for urban development in areas close to stations. However, the station communities are affected by barriers in the built environment. The biggest barrier is the railway itself, which opens up for opportunities, but which can also have negative consequences for social and economic sustainability, such as noise, vibration and poor air quality. An increased understanding of these consequences and an evaluation of solutions based on the global Sustainable Development Goals in Agenda 2030, would lead to better planning and development of the station communities of the future.

The aim of the project was therefore to develop an analysis method for evaluating accessibility and density based on the Sustainable Development Goals, especially Goal 11: Sustainable cities and communities. The results of the analysis are expected to lead to insights about conflicts and synergies between social, economic, and ecological effects, but also between the Swedish Transport Administration's and the municipalities' assignments and goals. Thus, the analysis result becomes an important decision basis in the municipalities' and the Swedish Transport Administration's joint planning and development of future station areas and communities in Sweden.

The project builds on the Urban stations communities knowledge process that ran between 2014 and 2019 within Mistra Urban Futures.
